I accidentally composed a massive response to a YouTube video I watched on AI-driven software development. I saw a vision of what I could have become had I held out much longer in the field, and this brief passage is the result.
This field needs class consciousness. The best time to unionise was yesterday. The second best time to unionise is now.
I am inclined to say you sound "cooked". Not in the "hey everybody look this guy has severe AI psychosis" sense, but rather in the sense that we have debased ourselves so thoroughly before our corporate masters that we sound utterly tired, defeated, drained, docile. The bill is going to come due at some point, and the rank and file are going to be the ones to pay the most dearly. Of course, I still think Dario and Sama are going to be begging for scraps or in prison in a couple years time if we're insanely lucky, but no matter what happens we sold ourselves out because our working conditions were too good for too long.
Take the time to remind yourself that none of this is normal and none of this is worth your mental and physical well-being. We are in an unprecedented moment in history in so many regards. There is absolutely no prior instance of the rapid fire cognitive load we are foisting upon ourselves on a daily basis. These tools were supposed to liberate us, and yet they have built an even bigger prison around us than we could have ever envisioned.
It's okay to take a break. Please. Do it for yourself. Do it for the sake of your family and future generations. In the kindest way possible, I beg of you and anyone else in a situation like yours, find some nice grass to quietly admire and touch it. I mean this literally and unironically. Look at a tree. Think about the tree. Think about your place in the universe among the billions of others we know about. Think about how small we are. Let the humility wash over you.
